Here is a clip that portrays pretty well how the world tries to comfort others. It is the New-Age, God-is-Love, one size fits all crap that we have all heard quoted back to us whenever we get into a serious jam and others want to comfort you, but don't know how to.
The real answer is Jesus Christ. He alone can atone for our sins. Acts 4:12 "And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."
This is especially meaningful for me because I watched my wife struggle through this sort of thinking over the period of several months after she first found out she had cancer. Thanks be to God He has revealed to her the forgiveness that is only to be found in His Son Jesus Christ.
